Elements and Performance Criteria
- Connect, test and verify alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) circuitry
- Identify work health and safety (WHS) issues and notify appropriate personnel
- Connect a series and a parallel circuit following safe work practices
- Choose appropriate test equipment and measure voltage (V), current (I) and resistance (Ω) values for the electricity in these circuits
- Use calculations to verify the flow of electrical current in these circuits
- Compare measured values to calculated values and determine reasons for any variations
- Measure low voltage (LV), extra low voltage (ELV) or telecommunications network voltage (TNV) and determine if values are within equipment or power supply specifications
- Use appropriate test equipment to measure AC voltage (multimeter) or AC current (clamp meter) in a safe manner that does not require an LV circuit to be disconnected
- Test residual current devices (RCD) or earth leakage devices to ensure they are operational prior to working with AC mains powered equipment, power supplies and tools
- Evaluate results and determine probable faults as required
- Evaluate analog and digital signals
- Perform cable selection
